Packet Trains

چکیده

Traffic measurements on a ring local area computer network at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are presented. The analysis of the arrival pattern shows that the arrival processes are neither Poisson nor compound Poisson. An alternative model called “packet train” is proposed. In the train model, the traffic on the network consists of a number of packet streams between various pairs of nodes on the network. Each node-pair stream (or node-pair process, as we call them) consists of a number of trains. Each train consists of a number of packets (or cars) going in either direction (from node A to B or from node B to A). The intercar gap is large (compared to packet transmission time) and random. The intertrain time is even larger. The Poisson and the compound Poisson arrivals are shown to be special cases of the train arrival model. Another important observation is that the packet arrivals exhibit a “source locality.” If a packet is seen on the network going from A to B, the probability of the next packet going from A to B or from B to

Analyzing Cross Traffic Effects on Packet Trains Using a Generic Multihop Model

To develop accurate measurement methods based on active probing, an understanding (at the packet level) of how probe flows and cross traffic flows interact with each other is required. Several existing measurement methods rely on packet-train probing. In this paper, we use a multihop model to describe how cross traffic packets affect a packet train. When one packet within a packet train is dela...

Packet dispersion techniques and capacity estimationConstantinos

The packet pair technique estimates the capacity of a path (bottleneck bandwidth) from the dispersion (spacing) experienced by two back-to-back packets 5]]19]]13]. It has also been claimed that the dispersion of longer packet bursts (`packet trains') can measure the available bandwidth of a path 5]]9]]3]. This paper examines such packet pair and packet train dispersion techniques. We rst demons...

On the Comparison of Packet-Pair and Packet-Train Measurements

Measurements of link bandwidth and available bandwidth are getting increasingly important in the Internet. One example is to verify service level agreements (customer: “Do I get the bandwidth I’m paying for?”). When developing accurate measurement methods based on active probing it is important to understand (at the packet level) how probe-packet flows and cross-traffic flows interact with each...

What Do Packet Dispersion Techniques Measure?

The packet pair technique estimates the capacity of a path (bottleneck bandwidth) from the dispersion (spacing) experienced by two back-to-back packets [1][2][3]. We demonstrate that the dispersion of packet pairs in loaded paths follows a multimodal distribution, and discuss the queueing effects that cause the multiple modes. We show that the path capacity is often not the global mode, and so ...

Channel Hopping Multiple Access with Packet Trains for Ad Hoc Networks

We present a new medium-access control protocol for ad hoc networks that does not require carrier sensing or the preassignment of unique codes to nodes to ensure that intended receivers receive unicast, or multicast, or broadcast data packets without interference from hidden sources. We call this new protocol channel hopping access with trains (CHAT). CHAT combines the notion of packet trains w...

Eecient Demultiplexing of Incoming Tcp Packets Sqn Tr92-01

When a transport protocol segment arrives at a receiving system, the receiving system must determine which application is to receive the protocol segment. This decision is typically made by looking up a protocol control block (PCB) for the segment, based on information in the segment's header. PCB lookup (a form of demul-tiplexing) is typically one of the more expensive operations in handling i...
